I remember reading last year a P3 blog about the benefits of therapy animals. It was very moving, explaining how pets can calm people down, reduce the impact of loneliness and diverting people’s attention away from bad things towards more positive ones.

My first pet was a beautiful black rescue cat called Byron – bought for me for the princely sum of £5 by Mark Simms’ mum! One year I got him some liver as a birthday treat but when I called him, several neighbourhood cats showed up too! I could never have known what Byron would spark, but I went on to have two other cats, Max and Sebastian. Our Sebastian was a beautiful Bengal but sadly, they don’t all have road sense and he was run over when he was just three.

You might not imagine cats and chickens living happily together. But as someone with eight chickens and six cats, I assure you it can be done!
